I believe diverse forces come into play for believers pondering the dilemma of a life radically oriented towards God in this confusing and deceptive world. Sir Isaac Newton – for whom the Supreme Being made everything by number, weight and measure – defined physical forces with his Three Laws of Motion that unraveled cosmic secrets. Sir Newton himself believed his scientific research was a lifelong quest for God. Newtonian mechanics help to demonstrate the hidden connection between the spiritual and material worlds that emerge from one blueprint. They are two sides of one cosmic coin minted by a Divine Agency. Newton’s First Law states that: “Every object remains in a state of rest unless it is compelled to change that state by an external Force”. This means that life, light, truth, joy, peace, wisdom and love are instilled into mankind by a divine Force that empowers us to become Children of God called to his side.
Like all matter, human souls too possess inertia: a tendency to resist change in the preexisting state, until we actively free ourselves from spiritual lethargy. Newton’s Second Law states that: “Whenever an immobile object is set into motion or changes its velocity, an external Force is responsible.” This means that alienated from the Divine Force we are powerless to combat death, darkness, deceit, misery, chaos, error and evil. We remain trapped in the world below and are branded as belonging to something other than the Power that raises us above. Finally, Newton’s Third Law states that: “For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction.” So when we move towards God, he pulls us closer with a centripetal force. However, when we drift away from him, he rejects us with a centrifugal force. Knowing that every action causes a reaction, we must choose between the attraction of light or the seduction of darkness.
The Principle Force of creation invites us to align with its purpose. Unlike non-sentient matter lacking reason, mankind is endowed with Freewill to make a rational choice. Empowered by the Spirit, believers must embrace their Christian identity by reflecting the character and attributes of God in their own life. Grace-filled believers prove their loyalty, in the midst of attacks by Opposing Forces, by purposefully engaging the world as Kingdom Makers. Countering doubt and hesitation, Grace reinforces us in the cosmic clash between the Forces of Light and the Forces of Darkness. Throughout the ages these two armies have arrayed head-to-head and today it’s you and me who bravely deploy on the front line. History unequivocally impels each new generation to pick a side according to its commitment. This is the way mankind ceaselessly carries on Newton’s quest for God and the sublime goodness that flows from this epic endevour.
Sir Isaac Newton wrote: "The Supreme God is a Being eternal, infinite and absolutely perfect. But a Being, however perfect, without dominion cannot be said to be Lord God. From his true dominion it follows that the true God is a living, intelligent, and powerful Being. From his other perfections, that he is supreme, or most perfect. He is eternal and infinite, all powerful and all knowing. That is, his duration reaches from eternity to eternity; his presence from infinity to infinity; he governs all things, knows all things that are and can be. We know him only by his most wise and excellent creation of things and final causes. We admire him for his perfections. We reverence and adore him on account of his dominion, for we love him as his servants. And a God without dominion, providence and a final cause, is nothing else but Fate and Nature.”
